For the global food system, transport accounts for about 5% of emissions. What you eat is generally more important than how far it travelled.
Global average life-cycle data puts beef from beef herds at 99.48 kg CO₂e per kg, and peas at 0.98 kg. The difference is mostly production and land use—not food miles.

Food estimates use global life-cycle averages from Poore & Nemecek (2018), processed by Our World in Data. Travel and electricity estimates use the UK Government’s 2026 conversion-factor dataset. Values are presented with their source units and are not product-specific life-cycle assessments.
