Beef and peas can be worlds apart.

Global average life-cycle data puts beef from beef herds at 99.48 kg CO₂e per kg, and peas at 0.98 kg. The difference is mostly production and land use—not food miles.

Distance matters. So does how you move.

For UK travel, the 2026 reporting factors list 0.16591 kg CO₂e per km for an average petrol/diesel-unknown car, versus 0.03092 for national rail per passenger-km.

Electricity emissions depend on the grid that makes it. The app’s electricity estimate uses the UK 2026 grid, transmission, and upstream factors; it is not a universal value.

What does CO₂e actually mean?

Carbon dioxide equivalent combines gases with different warming effects into one number, using their warming effect over 100 years. It makes methane, nitrous oxide, and CO₂ comparable.

Food estimates use global life-cycle averages from Poore & Nemecek (2018), processed by Our World in Data. Travel and electricity estimates use the UK Government’s 2026 conversion-factor dataset. Values are presented with their source units and are not product-specific life-cycle assessments.
